Hunting, a deadly problem: let’s demand the total cancellation of the decree listing ESODs
On August 4, 2023, the Ministry of Ecological Transition published a new order designating the list of « Species likely to cause damage » (ESOD). For the next three years, the prefects of each département will be able to authorize the trapping and slaughtering of the targeted animals, including outside hunting seasons.
Foxes, martens, weasels, weasels, carrion crows, rooks, chattering magpies, starlings, oak jays… Called « nuisibles » until 2016, the Ministry now calls them ESODs, but this does nothing to change the relentless pursuit of these animals. Targeted by a new ministerial decree valid for three years and motivated by the demands of the farming and hunting lobbies, they all risk being hunted down, trapped and slaughtered well beyond the hunting periods already authorized, in all the départements where prefects make this gift to trigger-happy enthusiasts who wish to practice their hobby all year round. Even though 71% of French people are in favor of banning the trapping of these animals, according to our latest poll (Ipsos/One Voice poll, October 2023).
Let’s protect foxes, martens, jays, weasels, crows, magpies and starlings, essential to the already fragile balance of biodiversity!
