History

Llamas and Humans

Native to the Andes, llamas are close cousins of camels.

Their common ancestor lived in the plains of North America at least 40 million years ago. Their first domestication is believed to date back 4,000 to 5,000 years ago in Peru, where humans early on used their wool and their assistance in carrying heavy loads. Despite being docile and gentle animals, they were massacred upon the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the destruction of the Inca Empire, and the introduction of sheep flocks to South America. Today, llamas have disappeared from the wild. Though less so than in the past, they are still raised for their wool, meat, and skin.

Animal sponsorships

Malkia and Gaspard

Sponsoring Malkia and Gaspard means giving these two inseparable companions the chance to heal from their heavy past in a world far from circus whips and scorn.

Left to fend for themselves for over eleven weeks, Malkia and Gaspard’s only shelter was a truck with a dung-stained floor when we came to their rescue. An animal tamer, already condemned after the rescue of Jon and the lionesses, had abandoned them on a farmer’s field with other animals. Thanks to an alert from the village mayor, we were able to intervene and save them all.

Care
We transferred Malkia and Gaspard to a partner sanctuary in France, where we take care of them. This place in the countryside offers a second life to rescued animals. There, they are surrounded by the best specialists who take care of them physically and psychologically after the traumas they have suffered.

Sponsoring Malkia and Gaspard means giving these two inseparable companions the chance to heal from their heavy past in a world far from circus whips and scorn.
