150000 signatures in 7 months, 5 legal actions, expert appraisals from recognized specialists from all over the world, an overwhelming veterinary report following an inspection ordered by the prefecture, 3 rallies, several hours of film footage, a petition signed by personalities. All this and Maya remains locked within a circus truck, the public authorities seem to be allowing themselves to be walked all over. And the ministry turns a deaf ear to our requests for a meeting ..
The next knockback, we learn that a place in Britain is preparing to host an elephant from a French circus. This place is far too small and not up to standard required, it further lacks veterinary care.
One Voice is therefore mobilizing once more for the elephant, and organizes an action in front of the circus that will be operating on Saturday May 26th at 10am in Montredon-des-Corbières near Narbonne.
It has been more than a month since we had any news from the Lot-et-Garonne prefecture, which refuses to meet with us.
A few weeks ago, we received images of Maya, locked up day and night in a truck, filmed by a whistle-blower who had access to the circus. Maya has not been seen since, either by visitors or in her winter quarters.
Sensitive information on the future of this elephant has been disseminated, information that we kept secret since April, so as not to risk compromising the future of Maya. But today we learn from one of our international partners, that an old elephant coming from France would be expected in Great Britain, in a place we greatly doubt that is suitable for Maya herself or the elephant Lechmee and any other elephant from a circus. Maya, like all the animals of the captive industry, must finally be able to live her life in a vast, adapted space, and benefit from proper supervised veterinary care.
Today, we are writing to the Ministry of the Ecological and Solidarity Transition with the Born Free Foundation, our British partner, to urge it to urgently support the rescue of Maya through the Lot-et-Garonne Prefecture and transfer her to a suitable place.
