History

Wolves and Humans

The last grey wolf (Canis lupus) of French lineage was killed in the 1930s after a presence of 400,000 years.

In the medieval era, our ancestors turned against their former brethren, seeing in them the very devil! They pursued them relentlessly until near extermination. Brave and resilient, wolves returned to our country from Italy in the 1990s. Despite their endangered status and the protections it affords, they struggle to regain their place in our forests and mountains. Their population, classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, numbered only 1,104 individuals at the end of winter 2022-2023. The reason: many farmers and hunters still refuse to coexist with them, even though solutions exist. To get their hides, they are willing to spread the worst lies about them. Instead of accusing them of embodying the devil, they now blame them for competing within a nature they wish to dominate. Yet wolves are far from the monsters they describe. On the contrary, they are guardians of ecosystem health, protectors of biodiversity, and wonderful mammals with admirable sentience. We fight to make them better known and to denounce the killings (orchestrated by the State) they fall victim to before their kind is wiped out. Forever.

Semproniano Sanctuary

We transferred Stella to our Animanatura sanctuary in Semproniano, Italy. Nestled in the hills and woods of Tuscany, it is a haven of peace for her, who so needs to frolic in nature but could not adapt to wild life. Here, we ensure her care. A qualified team, specialized veterinarians, and a spacious, verdant environment adapted to her ethological needs surround her!

Stella

Sponsoring Stella means recognizing the place she deserves in this hostile world towards wild animals. With your help, we can offer her a peaceful life in lush nature without ever fearing for her life again.

Stella was but a shadow of herself when we found her. Half-dog, half-wolf, she didn’t fit into any category. Born in a disreputable breeding facility in 2021, she was bought by a family that didn’t know how to care for her. To escape loneliness and boredom, she ran away and was soon caught by a pound. That’s where we met her. In a harsh and cold environment where her owners had cowardly abandoned her, she was terrified. And above all, she was threatened with death: too wild for some, not wild enough for others, no establishment wanted her. We took matters into our own hands and worked tirelessly to secure a place for her in our Tuscan sanctuary. Once spayed and vaccinated, we brought her to Italy, where she now thrives in a landscape of vast rolling hills and forests.

Sponsoring Stella means recognizing the place she deserves in this hostile world towards wild animals. With your help, we can offer her a peaceful life in lush nature without ever fearing for her life again.
