History

Dromedaries and Humans

They have accompanied humans since the end of Prehistory, helping them face the hostility of the deserts. When they become less useful for transport as they age, they are usually put to death.

If their wild ancestor remains unknown, dromedaries may have been domesticated in the southern Arabian Peninsula around 4,000 years ago. True allies of humans in arid regions, they helped transport silk, gold, spices, and salt across deserts. Today, they are still used by some nomadic tribes to travel and carry camping equipment. Female dromedaries are also highly valued for their milk. Not rewarded for their hard work, many dromedaries are slaughtered when they grow old. While some populations consume their meat, others make items or textiles from their leather or wool, particularly for tourists.

Animal sponsorships

Palerme

Sponsoring Palermo means helping him to recover from his past traumas by surrounding him with the best possible care.

A circus performer had left Palermo unattended in a field for over eleven weeks. He would have died of hunger and thirst if the farmer and village mayor hadn’t brought him hay and water to sustain him. During the seizure, he was very frightened and had great difficulty getting on board the trailer. By giving him time and surrounding him with kindness, he eventually regained his confidence.

Care
We transferred Palermo to a partner sanctuary where we take care of him. This place in the countryside offers a second life to rescued animals. Here, they are surrounded by the best specialists who take care of their physical and psychological health after the traumas they have endured.

Saba

Sponsoring Saba means ensuring that his strength is restored and that he has a peaceful future.

It was on a private plot of land exposed to the four winds that we met Saba. The Circassian to whom he belonged had left him with a farmer, theoretically for ten days, but had still not returned to collect him after eleven weeks! During this period of dearth, he also had to face the snow and had nothing to shelter in, apart from a truck whose floor was covered in droppings. The mayor of the village called us for help and we were able to organize his seizure in less than five days.
