One Voice and Sea Shepherd France are joining together against an aquarium project in Dieppe
Exploitation for shows

Wednesday, March 20th 2019 at 12 noon in front of the town hall, a rally has been organized by One Voice and Sea Shepherd France to alert public opinion against the project of oceanographic centre in Dieppe, which plans to put in a
glass jar thousands of sentient beings who have only one aspiration in life: to live free.

The aquarium project of one hundred and twenty pools, one thousand two hundred species, and thus tens of thousands of tropical captive individuals, a few meters from the Channel, seems already acquired.

The mayor of Dieppe is promoting it, praising the jobs that it will create, without seeing that this purely economic vision is a short-term vision. Times have changed: now the whole population is aware of the fragility of ecosystems and our survival depends on them all.

Muriel Arnal, president and founder of One Voice, says:«We cannot continue to lock up sentient beings for our entertainment or for scientific pretexts. The only place for animals is in the wild, living in freedom! And this wild kingdom must be cherished and protected.»

For One Voice and Sea Shepherd France, fish, including sharks, and all other marine animals have nothing to do what so ever in living in glass jars. They have the right to live by their nature, regardless of humans, in an environment protected from pollution and overfishing.

One Voice and Sea Shepherd France, who are in partnership, are organizing a rally in front of the Dieppe town hall Wednesday March 20th at noon, to oppose the project for this oceanographic centre in the district of the railway station. The building permit must not be issued !

Exploitation for shows

Everything had been organized for weeks for the seizure of Jumbo. We had everything prepared. The driver and the truck, a secure place, a sanctuary in Africa and despite state officials engaged and wanting to uphold the law. This Tuesday, February 26th 2019 assisted by officials of the law to prevent any violence from the Circassians that could cost the life of somone, including that of themselves, the seizure had to be cancelled. We are more determined than ever to allow Jumbo to finally live in his ancestral lands.

A finding of a flagrant offence, the seizure confirmed

The seizure is scheduled for Monday, February 25th, the ONCFS and the veterinarian could witness this flagrante offence. Compliance requests had been already made last year, none of which had been complied with either on the detention of Jumbo, nor on the safety of the public. But the hippopotamus was out of the tin box that serves as his home, and was stressed, he charged one of the keepers. Under these conditions impossible to proceed with the seizure, which was postponed to the next morning.

Circassians in violation, who used abuse and violence

But this Tuesday morning, the Police had to face violence from a group, this highly charged atmosphere quickly degenerating into violence.

The circus people once again showed their true face, the one without makeup or costume. Faced with the authority of the state, they did not hesitate to distribute punches, to throw metal barriers. Quickly, trucks were installed around the trailer where Jumbo lives, to make it even more difficult to seize the hippo.

The death threats, which the owner of the circus Muller has already resorted to against animal defenders on social networks, then rocketed against our drivers, their families and also the Police! A fork in his hand, one of the circus people attacked a Policeman, who saw the spikes dangerously close to his face.

A dangerous escalation against the authorities

Seeing no way out without injuries, the authorities decided to cancel the seizure. We were then on the verge of a tragedy.

Impunity has no place in the rule of the law. The police were exemplary, both in their commitment to us and in the calm that they showed in the face of this outburst of violence against them. They had come to defend an unfortunate hippopotamus whose life is nothing, being constantly locked up in a truck.

Jumbo is subjected daily to the will of the trainers and our incessant investigations show for three years now how much he suffers.

Justice will not stop there and neither will we. This setback only reinforces our determination. Your support in these circumstances is our strength. For Jumbo, please sign the petition.

Saturday, March 23rd at 11:30, we are organizing a rally next to the Pompidou Centre in Paris. All information is on Facebook about the event. Let’s be many for Jumbo!

RSP Martinique needs help against strays
Domestic animals

Lack of consideration, lack of funds, diseases, mass slaughter, etc.: Wandering pets have a hard time. In Martinique, a small association tries to make things happen! Let’s help their fight against straying.

In Martinique, dogs and cats without identification survive in search of water and food. Where do they come from? In many cases, unsterile cats are the parents of most of these homeless individuals. And then, there are cases of abandonment. Lost, vulnerable, many have the misfortune of becoming victims of cruel individuals. Others find themselves plagued by many diseases that will be poorly cared for. Left to their own devices, emaciated, without love, without anyone to take care of them, all struggle to survive.

Our 2018 survey shows once again that the only effective way to combat wandering is systematic sterilization combined with public awareness. However, the capture and killing of homeless cats and dogs is the solution too often proposed by the public authorities!

All these little beings are desperately waiting for the comfort of a loving family! Unfortunately, in Martinique as everywhere else in France, places in shelters are rare … Suffering from lack of funds and lack of help from the authorities, associations are taken by the throat. Raising awareness about sterilization, good care and adoption is paramount.

To help homeless animals in Martinique, a small shelter has been mobilized as much as possible. RSP Martinique volunteers identify, sterilize and care for their survivors. They now welcome 18 dogs and carry out awareness work. Their association is to support, they need all of us to set up a cattery so to welcome cats into the best conditions.

To fight feline strays, we also invite you to sign our petition. There is an emergency all over the country!

Cages must become a vague memory of an old barbaric era ! Let’s all take part in the European Citizens Initiative launched by CIWF to end the breeding of animals in cages ! One million signatures must be collected, and we are barely halfway there.

The sufferance of life in a cage

More than 300 million hens and chickens, pigs and sows, cows and oxen are born, suffer, breed and die in tiny cages across Europe. They will never feel the grass under their feet, they will never be able to frolic and play, they will never see the sun above their heads through the young leaves of spring, nor will they root around freely through the dead leaves… Instead for the little ones and for the mothers, concrete floors, permanently shackled, unhealthy unbreathable air, these are the horrors…

So many reasons to sides against the use of cages! Ethical, ecological, sanitary, social …

«The place for animals is not in a cage. No cage, no matter how big and comfortable it is can make an animal happy. But those in which the animals who are to be eaten survive are indecent and cruel. The law of profit can no longer despise the respect and dignity of animals! »Muriel Arnal, Founding President of One Voice

What is the « ICE »?

One Voice is one of 130 European associations supporting the Initiative of Citizens of European (ICE) launched by CIWF with a great fanfare
in Brussels at the end of September 2018.

This ICE is a procedure that allows the European population to draw the attention of its representatives to a subject that is particularly dear to their heart, and gives it a chance to influence decisions. It is one of the participatory democracy tools of the European Union. For this, an authenticated signature is required. The approach is more framed than signing a petition, but the principle is the same and the data is secure, of course and destroyed at the end of the
process.

We need everyone to get involved !

At least one million Europeans must sign ICE to have a chance to permanently put an end to cages, and this throughout the European Union. What a step forward it would be!

It remains barely a few months to reach the million signatures, and in France we are still too few who have signed! This is a cause that must go far beyond our circles of influence and flood the entire population! So less than six months from the end of the signature collection period, it is high time to commit, please sign and get this initiative signed around you, online or in print!

Everyone should commit to living a life without animals. It’s a decent life that we have to offer them. It’s really the bare minimum …

Domestic animals

In Spain, the monitoring system for violence against animals has unveiled results showing evidence of the link on the territory. Find out the figures and actions taken.

The Group for the Study of Violence against Humans and Animals (GEVHA), founded in 2000, develops educational programs for the prevention of violence against humans and animals, for the promotion of empathy and for the resolution of conflict. The GEVHA website centralises the information. GEVHA recently gave rise to the Monitoring of Violence against Animals.

Forty-six cases of domestic violence were studied: 89.13% of the victims were women and 10.87% were men. The coexistence between interpersonal violence and animal abuse was found in 93.33% of cases.

A wide variety of types of violence has been observed, and among the most common:

  • hitting: 57.14%,
  • killing: 19%,
  • negligence: 23.81%,
  • burns: 2.4%,
  • verbal abuse (screaming and terrorizing the animal): 66.67%,
  • tethered animals: 4.8%,
  • suffocation: 2.4%,
  • drowning: 2.4%,
  • shooting at an animal: 7.1%.

66,76 %

are verbal abuse

57,14 %

violence by beating

23,81 %

suffering negligence of humans

In studying the identity of the authors, it was determined that it was

  • adult males (the father) in 81.4% of cases,
  • adult females (the mother) in 2.33% of cases,
  •  boys in 4.65% of cases,
  • girls in 11.63% of cases
  • another parent in 2.33% of cases.

Previous research has shown that some victims spontaneously reported that their pet had developed behavioural problems related to violent acts and that this contributed to the suffering of the victim who did not know how to help his animal. For this research, we asked specific questions about behavioural disorders (phobias, aggressiveness, enuresis): these disorders were admitted by 19,23% of the victims. In 7 cases, we had to urgently find a shelter for pets, which was possible thanks to our cooperation with the Freedom Paws Link project (SAF-T Program partner).

For 30 years, researchers and professionals in various human services and animal welfare activities have established significant interactions between animal abuse, violence and neglect of children, domestic violence, abuse of the elderly and other forms of violence.

Animal abuse is no longer viewed as isolated incidents that can be ignored: it is often an indicator or warning that other household members are not safe. A link has also been established between animal abuse and violent offenses as well as personality disorders.

In Spain, two police services, the Polinyà and Castelló (UPROMA) local police, have specifically included animal abuse in their protocols as part of the risk assessment in the context of domestic violence and child abuse. Animal abuse is also considered as a risk factor for offenses. Both services participate in research with health professionals, and a correlation with animal abuse was found in 93% of the 46 cases of domestic violence studied. Both services also provide emergency shelter for animals through a partnership with the Freedom Paws Link project.

A new aquarium project in Dieppe, we must act quickly!
Other campaign or multi-campaigns of One Voice

Under the heat of the tropics, near the coastlines, manatees live their lives quietly. Here, delicious plants, immersed or floating on the surface of the water, delight their taste buds. Often, they take pleasure in scratching the banks with their legs to find succulent roots. But all this will be a distant memory for these nonchalant beings. The city of Dieppe has authorized the construction of a new aquarium. Sharks, turtles and many other species that live in tropical waters will soon be torn from their natural environment to be placed in this jar.

Edit of March 9, 2019:

We learn through the press (Dieppe information – March 8th, 2019) that there will eventually be no marine mammals (manatee,
dolphin) or turtle, even if it was initially considered at the beginning of the project. Sharks, they will not be exempt form this chance. There will be many in this jar …

Locked up to go crazy

What did they do to deserve such a life? When they are stuck in this aquarium, no one will hear their cries, yet they try with all their might. It is not because we do not hear them, that they do not suffer!

This glass prison is so narrow, so oppressive, so devoid of any vegetation peculiar to that of their tropical waters … Everything is wrong. Difficult for sharks to flourish, they who are able to cross an entire ocean. Here they are trapped. Sharks spend part of their day roaming the water, ready to find their meal of the day! Here, no hunting, no quest. The food is imposed on them and given directly. The trouble is terrible.

An elaborate communication and still unknown to humans

Most fish, including the smallest of them, have very fine hearing, far superior to that of humans. They hear everything that goes on in the water, sounds that are inaudible to us. The crashing and banging of the filter machines hammer constantly in their heads. Not to mention that of the crowd that taps on the glass and whose footsteps resound all around!

How do we communicate with aquatic beings around us? Even if they love to do so by grinding their teeth or rubbing their bones, all this hubbub hinders their social life. Artificial light, on the other hand, can destroy part of their visual sensitivity, so very sensitive indeed.

Swimming with them, causes extra stress

As if depriving them of their freedom was not enough, a diving pool is planned inside the aquarium. A great sufferance for all tropical fish, for which the human presence will be an important source of stress. Their already reduced living space is invaded by human beings, whose presence they feel, voices they hear and perceive each time their movements into what little territory they have. Can they not have just a little respite? A hint of rest?

Living in captivity means trying to survive in an environment that leaves almost no chance. The recent case of hammerhead sharks at the Nausicaá aquarium demonstrates this: only two of the thirty individuals survived in just a few months. In the same place, a manta ray perished due to parasites in its digestive system. The proliferation of bacteria is inherent in the systems of aquariums … We constantly denounce this! Stress, overcrowding, boredom, premature death, such is the harsh reality of life in captivity.

Let’s act before it’s too late! Express your indignation to the city of Dieppe and the Prefecture of Seine-Maritime and ask them to prevent this aquarium project (Download the model letter at your disposal).

Baby elephants caught in Zimbabwe and sold to a park in China

Baby elephants caught in Zimbabwe and sold to a park in China
Wildlife

The story repeats itself dramatically. In Zimbabwe, dozens of baby elephants have been violently captured and isolated for shipment to China. They will then be integrated into Chimelong Park. There, they will be trained to entertain an audience. We need your mobilization so that these tragedies are stopped at the source!

In Zimbabwe National Park, at dawn, helicopters arrive. They fly over the herds of elephants and then get closer and closer, creating a panic. Completely disoriented, the families separate and the little ones find themselves isolated. The rangers then shoot tranquilizing arrows at the baby elephants before loading them into a truck. Guardians, heartbroken mums desperately trying to help their youngsters. But these scary machines hover above the adults to prevent them from defending the little ones.

The elephants caught are between two and six years old. They are babies. They still suckle their mother, they are not mature either emotionally or physically. Can one even speak of being mature enough to face what awaits them?

They who learn from their mothers, their aunts and from their culture. They learn too from their own language over many years, how will they be after this heart-breaking experience? In freedom, the young females never leave their mother, the group being the social basis of elephants. The young males do not leave her until their fifteenth birthday and not before. How many will survive this violence, this loneliness?

What life awaits them? Uprooted, uncultivated, isolated and chained … The tens of kilometres travelled each day by the family will be but a distant memory, impeded in their development by the confines of their tiny pens. How quickly will it be before they go mad? For what is their escape, apart from submission and the madness that accompanies it?

After being snatched from their families, baby elephants are kept in pens, secretly housed in Zimbabwe National Park. A few days or a few months later, it will be what seems an endless journey. Cramped inside cages, the elephants will leave from the airport to China’s Chimelong Park, thousands of miles away. Never again will they see their families or the savannah. They cannot watch after their dead, nor follow the ancestral roads of their parents …

Already in 2012 and 2014 and then in 2016, Zimbabwe had allowed the capture and sale of many baby elephants. So many had died before even placing a foot in China!

And at the time, we knew the horror that awaited them: our survey in zoos in China in 2008 had already exposed the violence suffered by lions, turtles and bears in these concrete and sordid parks … The babies who survive will be exhibited and manhandled from morning to night for the rest of their tragic lives.

Today, Zimbabwe plans to send between 35 and 130 baby elephants to China. Along with us you can write to the ambassador of Zimbabwe in France to stop this barbarity! (You can download the letter template that we have made available).

Address:

Embassy of Zimbabwe in France

Let us all join together on mass to sign two petitions: one to try to convince CITES to ban the baby elephant trade and the other to have the Zimbabwean government stop these shameful sales.

Garbo, “security” dog in danger!
Domestic animals

In a train on line 7 of the Paris metro, Garbo, a « security » dog, was bleeding profusely in the presence of the security guard who was in charge of it. One Voice takes the case and conducts the investigation.

Garbo, a sheepdog, suffered in silence from a serious injury, while the security guard was on watch. Flabbergasted, the passengers of the line 7 of the Paris metro intervened on February 21st, and alerted us.

A sea of blood

Direct witness to the scene, a traveller told us what she witnessed. When she saw the security guard and his dog on the train, she immediately noticed Garbo’s agitation, the behaviour of the man pulling on the collar and a metallic smell of blood. And for good reason … With a deep wound at the base of its tail and a flap of flesh hanging off, the dog seemed to have received a brutal blow at the rear of the train by means of a heavy object. Panting hard, pupils extremely dilated, the poor dog endured hell while a huge red puddle widened under its flanks … The reaction from the guard? None, apart from aggression and vis-à-vis his dog facing the passengers who were worried. At the Riquet station, the witness sounded the alarm so that the dog was quickly taken care of. The driver then moved to the wagon … Unbelievably, he reportedly stated that he was aware of the presence on board of an injured and relieved dog on his way to a rescue centre at the Villette.

The metro as an ambulance!

Was RATP really aware of the situation? Did they know that one of their « security » dogs had been injured, suffered from violence and was driven under such conditions to an assumed veterinarian? The day after the events, they spoke on their twitter account reassuring the public on the care of the dog and rejecting the responsibility of its chaotic transport on a subcontract security company. We immediately sent them an official letter. RATP told us to contact its legal department … We will not stop there. This tragedy is indicative of the sordid exploitation of so-called « security » dogs, who have been overly coerced. In this case, we have started an investigation to find Garbo and help him. And we will obviously identify the culprit (s) in order to exercise justice!

In Bulgaria, the ZooPolice opens the way to a wake-up call regarding the Link
Domestic animals

Across Europe initiatives are emerging. In Bulgaria, a journalist from the country tells us about the ZooPolice’s contribution to the benefit of animals and the realisation of the importance of the Link.

In Bulgaria, in recent years, things are going in the right direction, thanks to the « ZooPolice », a police against animal abuse. This is really a good thing because people now understand that acts of violence against animals can have very bad consequences for their perpetrators.

The « ZooPolice » investigates animal abuse or the killing of animals, but may also remove dogs and other animals from their owners when they are not properly caring for them. Animal abuse, however, remains widespread, and we hear about it almost every day. It unfortunately exists in every village, because there are guard dogs very often kept in chains. For the villagers, animals are only used for work.

In the shelters, the animals’ living conditions are also very bad. «In the capital, I can say that the situation is satisfactory, the program for reducing the population of stray dogs is progressing well. The dogs that we meet in the streets of Sofia are old, and they are castrated. However, elsewhere in the country, this population is not controlled.»Karina Karanjotova, journalist for БНТ, the Bulgarian national TV

Another problem is that anyone here can create an illegal kennel. Regarding the link between animal abuse and human abuse, this topic is not very popular here and the media do not talk about it very much. In recent months, Bulgarian television has broadcast investigations on animal abuse, problems with shelters, illegal kennels and suffering animals, so now people are really beginning to understand that they cannot do anything they want with their pets and that society is now watching.

Animal testing

Anxious to respect a true ethic, the brand of hair products Antonin. B wanted to engage with One Voice and get its label « not tested on animals ».

The main goal of the brand is to manufacture products that are beneficial to the health of hair, replacing silicones and other components with all-natural ingredients. The concern of the designer is also to respect the environment and that of all living things. With this in mind, they select the raw materials themselves, producing them on a small scale and limit the intermediaries in order to better control the quality as well as the ethics of their suppliers.

For Antonin. B, the label serves both to promote the brand’s commitment to prove that it has taken the necessary steps to be ethically and respectful and to stand united with the stakeholders whose values it shares. Antonin. B joins brands already using the label, such as Altearah, Animaderm, Ashana.B, The Green Tree « well-being », Kadalys, The Canopy and Pur Eden, as well as the many other brands whose many products have obtained our label (Le Petit Olivier, Coslys, Stamen of the Lily, Lolita Lempicka …).

A label like One Voice’s

For twenty years, the fight of One Voice, against animal exploitation and cruelty in all its forms, is also done by proposing solutions. At the heart of its action: working for a world finally delivered from violence, by making the voices of animals, humans and the planet resonate together. Its label « not tested on animals » does not make any concessions. It guarantees the absence of tests on both the finished product and its ingredients.

In its variants, other criteria are integrated: biological and / or vegan. And for absolute transparency vis-à-vis the « consumer ». We also have a logo ensuring the absence of forced labour of monkeys for the harvest of coconuts, and the reduction of exports on products to China, who imposes tests on animals before allowing these products into the Chinese market place.

The guarantee of our One Voice label is therefore comprehensive: traceability is complete, from subcontractors to export markets. Ethics from start to finish!

A website dedicated to enlightened purchases

On our dedicated site, you will find a wide range of guaranteed products not tested on animals thanks to our label One Voice, but also for an ethical fashion thanks to the labels FFR and Animal Free that we develop in France!
