In 2014-2015, after several months of undercover investigation and liaising with the authorities, Team Zoe raided two cat breeders and uncovered trafficking across several counties, in particular of electronic chips and drugs. In four successive raids 181 animals were freed from this nightmare, mainly cats but also some dogs. Some had been kept in darkness, others in makeshift cages or even rodent cages. Living in filth, with neither water nor fresh food, many were sick or injured, underweight, full of fleas and ringworm… Our investigation into this case is still ongoing.

19 horses were seized following an allegation by One Voice about a breeder we had had under surveillance since 2006. Despite a permanent ban on keeping animals after his first prosecution in 2010, we had not become complacent. Team Zoe drove through an emergency intervention and the complex logistics of rehoming, and so these horses were saved. A further 45 horses were also removed from the clutches of this abusive breeder.
2013
Since 2013, Team Zoe has also been teaching about animals, explaining their ways and needs when living with us, instilling knowledge as the antidote to abuse. In partnership with sanctuaries throughout France and delivered by veterinary behaviourist Dr Nathalie Simon, our training workshops have enabled several hundred people to learn to live better with companion dogs and cats. We also produce leaflets to reach an increasingly wide audience.

2011
Scarcely two months later, Team Zoe took part in a new raid, saving 46 dogs from a breeder who had been under surveillance since 2004, in close collaboration with the DDPP (health and safety directorate) and the police. The owners were charged with serious abuse and cruelty to domestic animals, running an unlicensed business, ongoing despite having been given notice to desist for breeding without a certificate of competency, and possession of a guard or attack dog without insurance or a licence. The breeder was jailed. The logistics and funding of this operation were entirely underwritten by Team Zoe, which had coordinated the involvement of sanctuaries and allied organisations to take in the survivors, thereby easing the load on the police, firefighters and vets.

2000
One Voice investigators discovered horror in the house of a man who used classified ads to obtain dogs to eat. Some lived in car wrecks while waiting to be killed. The investigation, conducted with local police, led to the seizure and rescue of more than 40 dogs. Two years later, ongoing surveillance resulted in the freeing of his handicapped son whom he had forced to live in a wardrobe. This incident was a striking example of the link between violence towards animals and violence towards people.
In the years to follow, One Voice would intervene in many more cases, either massacres such as that of 200 cats in the Paris area, or acts of unbelievable cruelty such as inflicted on Lucky, a poor dog who died after being tied to the back of a car and dragged right across town. On many farms too, our investigators came across entire herds of animals abandoned, dead from hunger and thirst, sometimes through neglect or penny-pinching,but above all in order to claim European subsidies.
1999
One Voice brought to light a major case involving several networks and bribery of officials. The criminal mastermind was a Monsieur C, who owned several retail outlets which he supplied with dogs imported illegally via eastern Europe. Lorryloads of 600 puppies were arriving each week complete with false papers. It was a channel that One Voice would track all the way to the Czech Republic, uncovering the existence of central hubs in Belgium and Spain for forging papers Monsieur C. was already well known to the authorities, having been banned from keeping cows for acts of cruelty. However he had long tentacles and in the south he knew how to drum up plenty of support. This did not stop our investigators unearthing how he would lynch unsold dogs in his shed, where he also crammed in kittens suffering from fractures, abscesses and other symptoms of extreme abuse. In the end what got him arrested was his ties to trafficking stolen pet dogs to be cannon fodder for training fighting dogs. Journalists from the main evening 7 o'clock news had been closely monitoring our work with the authorities. Muriel Arnal gave evidence at his trial where, despite the best lawyers in the area pleading his defense, he received a heavy sentence.
